Toys Underperforms in the Motherland

Apparently you can't win them all.

'Toy Story 3' flops in Russia

...{T]he Pixar Animation Studios sequel has posted surprisingly frigid box-office results in Russia, one of the hottest international markets for movies, especially for animated films. The critically acclaimed computer-animated sequel generated only $4.8 million in ticket sales through its first 10 days at Russian theaters

I don't think Robert Iger is going to be able to sleep nights.

Toy Story3? Oh! Our mistake, Amerikanski.

We thought you said Tolstoy3.

Perhaps no one can afford to go to the movies over there nowadays.
You know.....world economy and such.

$366 million ww in 13 days ain't bad, Russia or not. And it's opening in Europe soon, and Japan at the end of the month.

I'll be awaiting with a bag of popcorn to read all the "I told you so's" vs. the "It doesn't mean anythings"

I told you it doesn't mean anything... ;)

(Okay, so on the average, how many ex-Communist-era Russians are in-joke familiar with who Barbie & Ken are?)

Hello from Russia!
Indeed Toy Story The Great Escape floped in Russia. Though many of animation enthusiasts who saw this animated feature are delighted by the 11th Pixar's hit, the majority of Russians are not interested in it at all. I don't know why but perhaps they thought it is for kids only. They preferred Shrek Forever which took more than $50 millions in Russia.
I watched the third chapter of Toy Story two times already and loved it!

And hey! My girlfriend still have three Barbie dolls and house for them! :-)

In mother Russia, Toy Story 3 watches you!

Or perhaps, the idea of watching escapes from armed prison camps didn't appeal as much to Russian audiences... ;)

^^
I don't know what footage they showed in Russia but the trailers I saw never really focused on the prison escape part of the movie.

Nice try though.

Almost EVERY Pixar movie is about escaping from or to somewhere. Go ahead, track it. You don't need a trailer to figure that out.

Shrek4 was released in Russia in late May, almost one month before TS3.

Perhaps everyone has been watching World Cup instead.

The world cup is it. It's the single most popular sport in history.

Yeah or maybe they just didn't want to see the movie...

I have a theory about this: could it be that ex soviet countries don't share the nostalgia that the west feels for potato heads and slinky dogs??? as brilliant as the Toy story films are, a big part of what makes the premise works is how much we can relate to the love for our childhood toys, I'm not sure but I have a feeling there was no soviet version of the "etch a sketch"

If a Pixar movie does better than a DreamWorks movie, it's because the public has good taste. If a DreamWorks movie does better than a Pixar movie, it's because a) the public is stupid, b) sunspots, c) the weather, d) a sporting event, e) the marketing, f) it's in more theaters, g) stereoscopic prices are higher, h) fill in the blank with the silly theory of the moment.

Another hello from Russia.
There's no need in theories and speculation because the answer is simple. As stated above people here are not interested in Toy Story 3 because they think it's for kids. Putting a lot of advertisement everywhere was all in vain. It's surprising how people in here treat every Disney/Pixar movie as a children's movie. Russians always liked Shrek franchise more. They think it's a comedy for adults. Simply as that.
